I pulled back from the prince, confused and disoriented. Though, I noticed with mingled relief and suspicion, I was no longer in pain.

“What did you do?”

“Saved your life,” he said curtly. “You could thank me. Or not, it makes no difference to me, really.”

I sat up a little straighter. I was not foolish enough to thank a fairy. They would take that as acceptance of a favor and demand repayment. “I would not have needed saving if you had fulfilled your oath to help me in the first place, so no, I don’t think I owe you any thanks.”

He laughed humorlessly and I was surprised to see that for once he wasn’t grinning. “My apologies,” he made a mock bow. “I erroneously thought that by removing anyone who wished to kill you from your path you would be able to walk in the woods unimpeded. I should have realized that you would find a way to die that a child could avoid.”

I spluttered, sitting up, and my head spun. Something was…off. I felt both dizzy and filled with energy at the same time. “What is wrong with me?”

“Nothing that won’t wear off.”

“But—”

“The boundary is just on the other side of the hill,” he cut me off and I blinked at him as he seemed to blur around the edges. “Do try not to die between here and there, I’m not sure I can stomach it.”

“Wait—”

But the air shifted, and he was gone.
